RIDDOR:  The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations

No Health and Safety system can ever eliminate the occurrence of accidents and dangerous incidents.   A robust well-integrated system will of course significantly reduce the likelihood of such incidents happening but the best any organisation can aim for is continual improvement in the way it operates.

The best way of achieving this is to learn lessons from every accident and near miss that occurs.  This means a thorough investigation in order to identify what steps must be taken to ensure there can be no repetition.

Under RIDDOR legislation, serious incidents have to be reported to the HSE who use these reports as one method of monitoring the levels of safety at work practised in the UK.

Investigating any accident or incident at work can be difficult, especially if people have been injured or are upset.  It can really help to have the assistance of an objective external advisor to steer the organisation through what can be a traumatic experience.

Even more important is the knowledge that the investigation will be carried out by an experienced person who will produce a first class report and list of recommendations free from any conflict of interest that can affect the judgement of a direct employee. This can be a sensitive subject, often difficult to handle.
