Carbon Reduction Commitment
The CRC is a mandatory scheme aimed at improving energy efficiency and cutting emissions in large public and private sector organisations. These organisations are responsible for around 10% of the UK’s emissions. The scheme features a range of reputational, behavioural and financial drivers, which aim to encourage organisations to develop energy management strategies that promote a better understanding of energy usage.
As the number of organisations that have signed up to the CRC grows as the government rolls out this programme to smaller organisations, it will be imperative that all those involved in the supply chain start to think about their own carbon footprint.
This will impact on many businesses that had previously thought they were not part of this process, such as accountants and law practices, as their larger clients will start to demand that all their suppliers are also looking at their own environmental impact.
There are grant funded schemes for those who wish to make large capital purchases which will reduce your carbon footprint and there is also a scheme that allows for these purchases to help reduce an organisation’s tax burden.
Enhanced Capital Allowances (ECAs) enable a business to claim 100% first-year capital allowances on their spending on qualifying plant and machinery.
This does not have to be a difficult process and with the vast majority of organisations there are considerable financial advantages to be gained by getting involved.
