Since the turn of the twenty first century protecting the environment and saving our planet has become an issue that the world’s leaders have started to take notice of and set targets for greenhouse gas emission etc. As we look around us “environmentally friendly” and “green” are used more and more by all sorts of organisations when they market their goods and services.
It is a fact that although on recent surveys conducted in the UK only 5% of the population are passionate about trying to only buy green products or services, in excess of a further 20% are certainly influenced by environmental issues when they make purchasing decisions.
It is also a fact that all public sector bodies are looking to ensure that their suppliers have green credentials as the legislation concerning these matters starts to increase, and this will works its way through supply chains.
To further encourage good environmental practices in the private sector the government set up the Carbon Reduction Commitment and forced many of the largest organisations to join. In simple terms by forcing our largest organisations to start to reduce their carbon footprint they are also now looking for suppliers who can prove their own green credentials.
Although this looks daunting for those who have not started to look at embrace environmental management or looked at how their own organisation complies with any of the new legislation, it can clearly be seen that there are great marketing opportunities for all those who embrace their own environmental management now as they will have a head start over the competition.
